Revive Your Email Campaign: Add Video

Video Production is powerful. Dah! You say. Even if I were to illustrate the benefits of using video production to create engaging online video, in great detail with fireworks and a light-show, the majority of people would roll their eyes at the curmudgeon dusting off old news. This is why I am always so surprised by the lack of video in email campaigns.

Engaging video production can take your email campaign to the next level. Engage your customers with helpful, useful, impressive video content.

The Value of Video Production

PewInternet found that 71% of adults who go online, watch video. In February 2011, YouTube had 490 Million unique users per month, spending 2.9 billion hours watching video.  That’s 3,310.5 centuries. If evolutionists have got it right then 2.9 billion hours ago the Neanderthals were only just emerging… just to put it in perspective.

So it’s not surprising that according to MediaPost, the number of marketers that plan to use video in email campaigns skyrocketed five times between 2009 and 2011.

Online Video Production adds visual flavor and intrigue to your email, entices users to click, watch and take action, and provides a seamless entry point to your brand or website. Additionally, video allows you to literally present your brand or product to the potential customer in a way that a written email never could.

The Proof is in the Pudding

According to a 2009 Forrester report, incorporating video into emails improves clickthrough rates by 2 to 3 times. One retailer saw a 300% increase in clicks when using videos to showcase products. A book publisher reported 100% increase in open rates and fully 47% of clicks to the online video. One online shoestore saw a 44% increase in online sales (MediaPost).

And what about the video’s effectiveness once users click on that email link?

Web videos are 53 times more likely to appear on the first page of Google than text or static images.

65% of senior execs visit a vendor’s website after watching a video. Younger executives, however, may be more fully (Forbes Insight, December 2010).

Shoppers who watch video on retail websites spend about 2 minutes more on those sites and are 64% more likely to buy compared to shoppers who did not watch videos, according to a 2010 study by Comscore.

How do I put video into my emails?

  1. Produce a Professional Online Video. Avoid the temptation to do it yourself or get some kid in university to do it. Good quality video is as essential as good email copy. A poor video will hurt your email campaign and reflect negatively on your brand.
  2. Grab a screenshot from the video. Whoever produced your video should be able to do it. If not, see point one.
  3. Put that screenshot into your email design. This should be a clickable link to your website or YouTube Channel.
  4. Watch the sales come running in.
