Letter to the French Cinema

French Cinema Video Editing Central Coast

Dear French Cinema,

Thank you for your film submissions this year; it seems none of them are in the English language which was a little disappointing. Thankfully some people I know have dubbed the films with American accents, quite ironic considering you try to be all things un-American.

Thankfully though, your films are quite easy to digest over a bottle of wine, however, I certainly don’t have time to watch over 300 films in your average weekly offerings.  I also find it incredibly touching that you dedicate valuable distribution slots to the showing of whole series of films devoted to particular directors, actors, countries or periods in the history of the cinema. I love how you idolise film directors such as Jean Renoir, Francois Truffaut, Jacques Tati and Robert Bresson among other dead individuals. Additionally, your love for black and white films also suggests a deep seated nostalgia for your cinematic glory days back in the early part of the 20th century. All of this is truly touching and partly while I value our friendship.

However, despite all these culturally valuable activities it must still really sting when you see the latest Hollywood film making millions in a couple of days while your beautiful releases struggle to make a few thousand in the opening weeks. Why is that I wonder? Maybe this nostalgia must be replaced with commercial reality? But that is just as unacceptable as replacing the Eiffel Tower with an amusement park. And so I cry for you.

Here is a thought amongst tears though; Hollywood has made money by bastardising other cultures, why not do the same? You certainly have a superiority complex to accomplish it. Refrain from your usual layers of subplot, visual metaphors and subtle inferences and instead become as tactless as American cinema (French style of course).

You could well beat them at their own game!

Tempting isn’t it. Finally, please speak English in your films; it’s much better for all of your friends outside of France.

Cinematically Yours,

Josh van Tongeren

I like this site very much, Its a very nice office to read and find info. “The glory that goes with wealth is fleeting and fragile virtue is a possession glorious and eternal.” by Sallust.
