Vimeo On Demand: Exciting new distribution for video production

So, you’re a filmmaker, video production guy or video producer and you have just created your master piece.

You have spent a year in production, another in post-production stretching your grant or, more likely, credit card to its limit all the while cleaning toilets, delivering pizzas or facing the 9 to 5 grind to keep a roof over your head. The sound mix is back, the grade is done and you’ve had your festival run ANYWHERE you could get it (see Top Ten Basics of Film Distribution)

Now… how do you distribute it?

Vimeo have just released a new distribution channel called Vimeo On Demand.

In looking at the front end of Vimeo on demand it seems quite good with a featured banner above the fold and a selection of Vimeo’s recommended films just below that.

At first glance, what seems missing from the Vimeo On Demand homepage is a good search function. If for example I was to search for the film “I Am Not A Hipster” by Destin Daniel Cretton (Nice Film FYI), then the search bar in the top right of the page brings up EVERY film on Vimeo that features ANY of those keywords rather than bringing up the Vimeo On Demand film that I’m looking for.

Since videos listed in Vimeo On Demand are from Vimeo PRO users, this search will not show the film, even if I were to search through the 255K films in the search. Defiantly not well thought through.

Lower on the page there is a browse function that is brilliant for searching by a broad genre, user rating, and price but even then, still no search function.

Although the front end is slightly disappointing, the microsite and purchasing functions of this video production showcase are great.

The microsite features the trailer front and centre with the call to action clear and evident beneath the trailer.  As a Vimeo On Demand user you have the option to sell a digital print of your video (that is, the user can download it) or alternatively a Vimeo user can lease the right to watch the movie online for a set period of time. The video production or film can be purchased using a credit/debit card or by using PayPal.

The microsite also features information such as the description, the user who uploaded it, a poster (or featured image), release date, viewing period, duration and the regions it is available to watch. Noticeably missing are credits; who were involved with the film. Seeing as how Vimeo is all about the artist, I would have thought that the credits, at least the basic ones, would have been viewable on the microsite.

The microsite is integrated with social media and Vimeo users can rate or comment on the film.

With the 90/10 revenue split going into your pocket, this is certainly an attractive and exciting new distribution option for video production houses and indie film makers everywhere. You do need to sign up for a Vimeo PRO account which is a $200 out-of-pocket expense which means at $10.10 per download, you would need at least 20 downloads to make this money back… but if your film is half decent, this should be easy.

Does this replace the need for getting your movie iTunes ready or having your own website? No, but it is a hell of a lot easier than dealing with Apple and it takes care of the video hosting and payment avenues of your movie’s web presence.

Overall, there are quite a few improvements but I’m excited to see Vimeo On Demand and what it could mean for video production guys, video artists and film makers everywhere.
