5 Mindsets that limit Creative Video Production #1

“It’s just a…”

Rather then looking at any video project with a “it’s just”, I always try to approach it with a “what if?”. If you approach every idea as a new and fresh opportunity to create a work of art, then you will create a work of art. Seize every opportunity to build your brand’s voice, promote your band’s image and captivate your audience.

This may seem like an airy-fairy concept but the limiting power of “it’s just” causes profound practical problems. Let’s take for instance a series of Internet videos to promote… pipe cleaners. Just roll with it.

Pipe Cleaners

If you approach this project with the mindset, “It’s just a promotional video on pipe cleaners” then you may come up with the idea of having a presenter talk directly to camera with a white backdrop, three-point lighting, teleprompter… single Mid-Shot with a cut away to the product and end with logo and stock music.

Wow… boring as an unclean pipe.

You will never be able to generate the interest you require in today’s video saturated Internet. If however you approach this video with a mindset of awesome then you may come up with a more creative idea.Possibly a stop-motion animation using pipe-cleaners. Perhaps a web-series of a story of a man falling in love with a life size pipe cleaner woman.

Even if you want to go with a traditional straight to camera presentation then you will at least come to the project with an attitude of, “what if” rather then “it’s just” and consequently you will find new ways to give your video pizzazz.

The “it’s just” attitude is a bad one. Your ideas don’t always have to be “big” but you do however want innovation, a professional look or a product that can stand up to comparison. It’s true that every project should be treated with the right attitude and that it’s potential is reached.
